This memoir by Captain Francis Rawdon Chesney of the Royal Artillery is written in longhand and details his 1831 exploration of the Euphrates River Valley. The work begins with "a letter to His Excellency Sir Robert Gordon, dated Bagdad 25th January 1831" and includes a hand-drawn map showing the area between Lake Manzala and Suez. In 1830 Francis Rawdon Chesney submitted a report on the feasibility of making a Suez Canal and a year later he proposed a new overland route to India by way of the Euphrates Valley.
